Perry N. Halkitis, dean of the Rutgers School of Public Health, has been named a Distinguished Fellow of the Public Health Academy by the National Academies of Practice (NAP).
This prestigious honor recognizes his outstanding achievements and leadership in both professional and interprofessional care.
“It is an immense honor to be recognized as a Distinguished Fellow by the National Academies of Practice,” said Halkitis, who is also Hunterdon Professor of Public Health & Health Equity and Distinguished Professor of Biostatistics & Epidemiology at the Rutgers School of Public Health. “This recognition reflects a lifelong commitment to advancing public health, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and striving for health equity for all people and populations. It also demonstrates my commitment to scholarship that is conducted on the hyphen of theory and practice.”
Halkitis is an infectious disease epidemiologist, applied statistician, and public health psychologist. He conducts this work through his research, teaching, and activism. He is also the founder and Director of the Center for Health, Identity, Behavior & Prevention Studies (CHIBPS).
He is an elected fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine, The Society of Behavioral Medicine, The American Epidemiological Society, The European Academy of Translational Medicine and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He is also in four divisions of the American Psychological Association.
In 2023, in recognition of his lifelong contributions to scholarship, education, community engagement, and activism, the Perry N. Halkitis Endowed Chair in LGBTQ+ Public Health was established with a $5 million gift. The Halkitis Chair will ensure that LGBTQ+ health remains central to the work of the Rutgers School of Public Health for years to come.
