Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology
About Us
The Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology focuses on biostatistics and epidemiology, as well as other areas like pharmacoepidemiology, through its research, educational programs, and community engagement activities.
Biostatistics and epidemiology are integrated into all aspects of public health research and practice, from developing methods to research-to-action programs that address pressing public health problems. This department plays a vital role in advancing scientific knowledge and methods, especially in identifying disease causes and developing effective public health interventions.
Now Offering a Master of Science (MS) in Epidemiology, Pharmacoepidemiology Concentration
This degree prepares students for public health, clinical practice, and population health research through comprehensive epidemiological training, research methods, and analytical methods. Students can choose to concentrate their studies in either epidemiology or pharmacoepidemiology.
Degree Programs
The Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology prepares students with the skills necessary to advance scientific knowledge and methods through its various graduate degree programs and post-baccalaureate certificate offerings.
Our Faculty
Biostatistics and epidemiology are collaborative fields by nature, and our faculty engage in research throughout Rutgers University and beyond. Faculty have expertise in a wide range of biomedical research, including cancer clinical trials, cancer genetics, epidemiology, environmental health, and family medicine. We are actively engaged in teaching and mentorship, providing students with the education and experience needed for successful careers in public health.
In addition to our department's primary faculty members, we also have individuals from across the university and partner organizations who hold secondary faculty appointments within our department. You can find a list of our secondary faculty here.

Meizhen, MS'22
For Meizhen, an alumna of the MS in Biostatistics degree program, the diverse, collaborative, and professional academic environment, was the reason why she selected the Rutgers School of Public Health.
While completing her degree requirements, Meizhen worked as a student assistant at the Rutgers University Biostatistics and Epidemiology Services Center, providing statistical support including design, programming, data management, and data analysis, to investigators throughout Rutgers University.
"This experience not only gave me a real sense of the importance of biostatistics for research projects, but also improved my communication skills with clinical researchers. I am very grateful for this experience and for my supervisor, Patricia Greenberg, who helped me a lot, not only by giving me professional guidance but also by encouraging me and giving me confidence to become a qualified biostatistician.”
Clair MPH'22
For Clair, alumna of the MPH in Epidemiology degree program, "epidemiology touches on so many health issues and is truly interdisciplinary," she says. "The concentration has enabled me to improve my research and statistical skills and to pursue a career working with populations with high disease burdens that interest me most."
Rutgers University Biostatistics & Epidemiology Services
Rutgers University Biostatistics & Epidemiology Services (RUBIES) is a center within Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and the Rutgers School of Public Health that provides statistical support, including design, programming, data management, and data analysis, to investigators throughout Rutgers University.
