Most people spend more than 90% of their time indoors. In addition to infiltration of outdoor air pollutants, there are many and varied sources of air pollutants right inside our homes, offices, and schools. These sources include appliances that burn fossil fuels (e.g. gas stoves, recently in the news), tobacco products, building materials and furnishings, cleaners, personal care products, pesticides, excess moisture and mold, and hobbies. Different indoor environments have unique combinations of sources of air pollutants. Building occupants may also have individual vulnerabilities to the health risks associated with various indoor air pollutants. Recognizing and identifying these air pollutants is the first step to prioritizing actions to improve indoor air quality. We will review major indoor air contaminants and their health effects, sources, and evidence-based approaches to eliminating or reducing exposure to improve health and well-being.
