Biography

Hillary Samples, Ph.D., M.H.S., is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Behavior, Society, and Policy at the Rutgers School of Public Health and core faculty at the Rutgers Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research.

Prior to joining Rutgers, Dr. Samples completed a post-doctoral fellowship in substance use epidemiology at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. She earned her doctoral degree in health services research and policy, her Master of Health Science in population mental health, and a certificate of bioethics and public health policy from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Research Interests

Dr. Samples works with large health care databases and national survey data in research examining patterns of behavioral health care, the relationship with patient and population outcomes, and the influence of social and structural factors on the epidemiology and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders. With an emphasis on equity for disadvantaged groups, her work examines health care access and quality for low-income Americans and individuals with disabilities, focusing on disparities in treatment and outcomes across racial and ethnic groups.
