Dual Degrees and Programs

In partnership with the Rutgers School of Social Work, the Rutgers School of Public Health offers students the opportunity to earn a MSW alongside a MPH. MSW/MPH students will develop advanced knowledge and skills in the interrelated areas of public health and social welfare, using an interdisciplinary approach to preventing, addressing, and solving health problems at the micro (individual/clinical), mezzo (family, organizations or communities) or macro (society or population) levels. Upon graduation, students can apply for licensing in social work and/or take the Certified in Public Health exam.

New Brunswick and Newark

MSW/MPH students participate in the MPH in Social Work and Public Health concentration to take full advantage of the dual-degree program. Other MPH concentrations would require additional coursework as less credits would be shared among the two degree programs.

Interested applicants in the MSW/MPH dual-degree program must apply separately to each school. Once a student has been admitted to both programs, they are then identified as an MSW/MPH dual-degree student.

In partnership with Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, the Rutgers School of Public Health offers pharmacy students the opportunity to earn a PharmD alongside a MPH. PharmD/MPH students will build on their pharmacy training with a sound understanding of public health fields, such as organization of health services, pharmacoepidemiology, healthcare policy, biostatistics and health education.

The PharmD/MPH is available only for select, highly-qualified PharmD candidates at the Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy The program provides pharmacy students with a pathway to complete both the PharmD and the MPH in less time than it would take to complete both degrees sequentially. Students will continue full-time study in the PharmD program and graduate on time with their classmates. However, by taking select MPH core courses while in the PharmD program, these students will be able to complete the MPH with approximately one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study, immediately following the completion of the PharmD degree.

New Brunswick with the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy.

Application to the PharmD/MPH dual-degree program is limited to students who have already been accepted and are enrolled at Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy.

Students interested in the dual PharmD/MPH degree program should first contact the  Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, to discuss their qualifications and certify their eligibility. 

Interested PharmD students may apply directly to the Rutgers School of Public Health beginning in the spring semester of the first year (P1) of the PharmD professional program. The GRE requirement is waived. Students who want to take MPH courses prior to acceptance into the PharmD/MPH dual-degree program may register for up to two MPH courses, or six credits, as a visiting student.

In partnership with Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, the Rutgers School of Public Health offers PsyD students the opportunity to earn a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) alongside a Master of Public Health (MPH) – providing strong interdisciplinary training in psychology and public health. The PsyD/MPH dual-degree program allows PsyD students to complete both their doctoral degree and the MPH degree in five or six years depending on which various alternative schedule is chosen.

In partnership with Rutgers Business School-Newark and New Brunswick, the Rutgers School of Public Health offers business students the opportunity to earn a MBA alongside a MPH. MBA/MPH students will build on their business training with a sound understanding of public health fields; and prepare students for administrative positions in the growing sector targeting cost-effective health care and public health approaches.

New Brunswick and Newark with Rutgers Business School-Newark and New Brunswick

Only the Health Systems & Policy concentration at the Rutgers School of Public Health is currently participating in this dual-degree.

Interested applicants in the MBA/MPH dual-degree program must apply separately to each school. Once a student has been admitted to both programs, they are then identified as an MBA/MPH dual-degree student.

MPH Admission Requirements: For the MPH, interested applicants must submit a paper (hard-copy) application; applicants should not apply through SOPHAS. Students must complete the application form, personal essay, and provide two letters of recommendation, submit test scores (GREs or GMA T are accepted), formal transcripts, and the application fee to the Rutgers School of Public Health.

MBA Admission Requirements: For the MBA, applicants are required to submit an online application and select the MBA/MPH dual-degree option. Students must then pay the application fee, submit a copy of their resume, official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, a two page essay, two letters of recommendation, and test scores (the MBA accepts both the GRE and the GMAT) to the Rutgers School of Business.

In partnership with Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (Newark) and the Rowan Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Rutgers School of Public Health offers biomedical science students the opportunity to earn a MBS, non-thesis based, alongside a MPH. MBS/MPH students will provide students with a strong knowledge of contemporary research methods and scientific foundations in both the biomedical sciences and public health. Individually, the MPH degree program requires 45 credits and the MBS degree program requires 30 credits.

Interested applicants in the MBS/MPH dual-degree program must apply separately to each school. Students may apply to each school simultaneously, or students may already be matriculated at one of the schools and then decide to pursue the dual-degree. Students in either school may apply to the other school for the dual-degree at any time prior to the completion of their penultimate semester in the degree program for which they were originally admitted. Once a student has been admitted to both programs, they are then identified as an MBS/MPH dual-degree student.

MPP/MPH students will have in-depth complementary training as public policymakers and public health experts. Graduates will build on their policy training with a sound understanding of public health fields, such as organization of health services, epidemiology, healthcare policy, and biostatistics.

The MSPA/MPH dual-degree program allows PA students to complete both their MSPA degree and the MPH degree in four years depending on which various alternative schedule is chosen.

Only the Departments of Environmental and Occupational Health and Justice and Health Behavior, Society, and Policy at the Rutgers School of Public Health are currently participating in this dual-degree.

Application to the MSPA/MPH dual-degree program is limited to students who have already been accepted within the Physician Assistant Program at the Rutgers School of Health Professions.

In partnership with the Rutgers Law School, the Rutgers School of Public Health offers law students the opportunity to earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) alongside their Juris Doctor (JD). The JD/MPH dual degree program combines the educational and legal strengths of the Law School with those of the School of Public Health to provide law students with a strong knowledge of the principles of both law and public health and is intended for students who plan to practice law in the public health arena or apply legal knowledge to the field of public health.

The JD/MPH (Health Systems and Policy concentration) program offers graduates a broad range of career choices. My background in health policy analysis and public health principles informs my health law practice daily.

Newark and Camden for students enrolled in the Rutgers Law School

Only the Health Systems & Policy concentration at the Rutgers School of Public Health is currently participating in this dual-degree. The Health Systems & Policy concentration is based at New Brunswick. Core courses are offered via various modalities depending on the semester but Health Systems & Policy concentration courses are offered in New Brunswick.

Application to the JD/MPH dual-degree program is limited to students who have already been accepted at the Rutgers Law School.
