Environmental & Occupational Health

Faculty Profile

  • Howard M. Kipen, MD, MPH

  • Professor

  • Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Justice

  • CV

Air pollution; indoor air quality; biomarkers; cardiorespiratory effects of air pollution; multiple chemical sensitivities.

Dr. Kipen received his medical degree from UC San Francisco and his MPH from Columbia University. He trained in internal medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian and in occupational medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in NYC.

Research Interests
Dr. Kipen is interested in understanding health effects, and mechanisms, by which ambient air pollution and indoor air pollution produce those health effects. He leads experimental studies that increase or decrease short term levels of pollutant exposure and assesses resultant changes in respiratory and systemic oxidative stress.

Research Highlights

Two hour drives on the New Jersey Turnpike lead to acute and reversible changes in respiratory and vascular biomarkers of oxidative stress.

Use of a portable air cleaner significantly reduces pollutant levels in urban homes in New Jersey.
