The DrPH degree in Epidemiology offers students rigorous training in epidemiologic concepts, methods and study designs suitable for implementing or evaluating public health programs. Upon completion of the degree, students will be able to demonstrate the following skills and competencies: design, develop and implement research studies or programs with direct public health application; formulate specific hypotheses and determine an appropriate study design and analysis plan using quantitative data analysis techniques; evaluate public health programs and conduct of public health surveillance; apply survey research methods to design reliable and valid measurement instruments; cultural competence and ability to effectively work on multidisciplinary teams (scientists, non-scientists and stakeholders); integrate principles of community-based participatory research in the design of public health programs; translate epidemiologic research findings for public policy; knowledge of principles of prevention and intervention; knowledge of public health law, jurisdiction and public health ethics, including Institutional Review Board guidelines; proficiency in communicating with the public media and policy makers; and familiarity with budgeting a major public health program.

Each Department identifies competencies for each degree offered. These competencies reflect the full range of knowledge, skills, and other attributes that a student will acquire as a result of completing the requirements for a particular degree.

Upon graduation, a student completing the DrPH curriculum in Epidemiology will be able to:
Students seeking the DrPH in Epidemiology degree must complete a minimum of 72 credits of academic work with a minimum GPA of least 3.2 overall and a 3.2 in the set of required courses specified by their department; earn no more than nine (9) credits bearing grades less than B; and complete the degree requirements within nine years. Courses are three credit hours unless otherwise noted.
