BEST Program:
Building Education, Student involvement, and Training in Maternal Child Health

The goal of the BEST Maternal and Child Health Fellowship Award is to support students seeking a career in maternal and child health.  Up to six fellows will be selected per year.  Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Rutgers School of Public Health degree program.  Students from underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

The requirements for the BEST Fellowship are:

  • Completion of the Fundamental in MCH course (HSAP/EPID 0560) offered Spring/New Brunswick and Fall/Newark with a grade of B or higher;
  • Completion of a two semester practicum experience with poster presentation, to be agreed upon with the Practicum Director (Note: the practicum may or may not also serve as a Fieldwork project, depending on the requirements of the organization and the student’s department);
  • Presentation of practicum experience to the MCH student organization; and
  • Attendance of at least 4 RU-MaCH student organization meetings or events.

$1000 will be awarded to the student at the beginning of the program, and the additional $1,000 will be awarded upon completion of all requirements.  Fellowships begin September 2016 and all requirements must be completed by May 15, 2017.

From a BEST Fellow Alumni...

"The BEST program gave me the opportunity to learn from a diverse and interdisciplinary group of faculty and guest speakers, and was very enriching in my professional development. I believe that the BEST program improved my knowledge, skills, and abilities so that I am more competent in addressing health disparities among under-represented communities. I am confident I am better prepared for a career in the public health field."
